Recycle your textiles with Sigma Embroidery & Printing

At Sigma Embroidery and Printing we have become increasingly concerned with the state of the Textiles waste industry and the impact it is having on the environment. Therefore, you can now send your old clothing to Sigma where it will be recycled safely and efficiently, significantly reducing the impact on the environment.

The problem

Currently, waste is a major issue in the textiles industry. The UK currently consumes around 1.1 million tonnes of clothes per annum but the shocking fact is that we are throwing away over 1 million tonnes of clothes in the same period. To make matters worse. Half of the waste ends up in a landfill which is a huge problem for the environment. Clothing made from synthetic fibres can take over 200 years to decompose in landfill, clearly a big problem for these waste sites and ultimately for the environment itself. This issue must be addressed immediately to ensure the textiles industry doesn’t continue to be a burden on the climate.

Common disposal methods

At this moment there are three main disposal methods for uniform and branded PPE. A common method is turning these discarded clothes into textile rags, allowing this waste to be reused in a simple and easy way. However, it fails to solve the ultimate problem of an end-of-life solution as the old clothes can only be textile rags for so long. It is simply delaying the process of dealing with the waste. Another method is incineration. Whilst this method does have some positives: avoiding landfill, protecting your brand, cheap to do, the dangerous greenhouse gases and toxins released throughout the process mean this is not a sustainable method and has a major effect on the environment. Similarly, making use of landfill is a cost-effective option. However, the toxic substances released into groundwater and surrounding soil helps accelerate climate change. Sending 1 tonne of textiles to landfill releases over 500kg of CO2, and with over 500,000 tonnes of textiles waste sent to landfill every year the consequences of this are detrimental.

The Solution

At Sigma Embroidery and Printing, we are committed to helping tackle this waste problem, capitalising on greener and more efficient methods of dealing with old clothing. The main way we can combat the issue is by recycling. The old clothing will be recycled into new materials right here in the UK, the shredded textiles being turned into a variety of useful items (insulation, partition walls, sound boarding etc.). Using this method, we can reduce the greenhouse gases emitted by 70% and avoid filling up landfill, whilst still protecting YOUR brand. You can recycle your clothing waste with Sigma Embroidery and Printing. Simply bring or post your items for recycling back to Sigma, where they will be placed into a secure unit to prevent unauthorised access. These items will be collected regularly by our recycling partner for secure destruction and recycling. An Environmental and Impact Certificate is provided for this process.
